Zooey Deschanel has been cast in Physical Season 3 at Apple TV+, joining Rose Byrne in the dark comedy series.
The New Girl alum will play Kelly, a network sitcom star who decides to enter the burgeoning Fitness Industry in the new season. A Physical Season 3’s release date has yet to be announced.
Physical is set in the idyllic but fragile beach paradise of sunny 1980s San Diego. The half-hour dark comedy follows Sheila Rubin (Byrne), a quietly tortured, seemingly dutiful housewife supporting her smart but controversial husband’s bid for state assembly. But behind closed doors, Sheila has her own darkly funny take on life she rarely lets the world see. She’s also battling a complex set of personal demons relating to her self-image… that is until she finds release through the unlikeliest source: the world of aerobics.
Season 2 featured new addition Murray Bartlett alongside Rory Scovel, Dierdre Friel, and Paul Sparks. The season found Sheila having successfully launched her first fitness video, only to encounter some bigger challenges on her path. She was torn between loyalty to her husband (Scovel) and a dangerous attraction to someone else. And since she’s no longer the only game in town, she found herself having to outrun some fierce new competitors on the road to building a full-fledged fitness empire.
Deschanel is best known for playing Jess Day in New Girl on Fox. She’s also known for 500 Days of Summer, Yes Man, Weeds, Bridge to Terabithia, and more. She’ll next be seen in the film Dreamin’ Wild.
Byrne stars and executive produces Physical alongside creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner Annie Weisman. It’s a production of Tomorrow Studios (an ITV Studios partnership). The series is directed by Stephanie Laing, who also serves as executive producer along with Marty Adelstein and Becky Clements for Tomorrow Studios and Craig Gillespie. Alissa Bachner serves as co-executive producer.
