John Davidson has issued an apology following his tic at the BAFTAs.
As you know, the activist who has Tourette’s Syndrome shouted a racial slur when Sinners stars Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were onstage presenting. It was a traumatizing situation all around that left people divided on how to react. But now, a week later, the Tourette’s Action advocate is finally addressing the incident.
In a Facebook post, he wrote:
“I’ve been waiting all week until the dust settles after the weekend at the BAFTAs in London. I would like to thank each and every one of you who have shown love, support and solidarity towards myself and the rest of the Tourette’s Community. Your kind words and support have got me through a very difficult week.”
He continued, explaining that he will never apologize for having the syndrome, but he understands the pain using a word like that can cause:
“Whilst I will never apologies for having Tourette syndrome, i will apologise for any pain, upset and misunderstanding that it may create. This past week has been tough, and has reminded me that what I do raising awareness for such a misunderstood condition, there is still a long way to go and I will keep on keeping on until this is achieved.”

As we previously covered, John’s Tourette’s Syndrome has a symptom called Coprolalia, which is described as “the involuntary outburst of obscene words or socially inappropriate and derogatory remarks”. This is what led to his usage of the N-word during the broadcast. Still, it was a deeply painful experience for Michael, Delroy, and so many others in attendance.
Since the incident, host Alan Cumming has also released an apology for the award ceremony going south.
