Maria Grazia Chiuri continues to find inspiration in the past, present, and future of femininity. For her spring/summer 2023 show, the designer referenced a Dior scarf from the ’50s with a map of Paris as a starting point, and the legendary Tuileries Garden designed by Italian noblewoman Catherine de Medici. Chiuri combined the city’s labyrinthine streets with Medici’s ground-breaking 16th-century fashions, such as guêpières and wide court skirts, plus a dose of Dior’s signature florals and intricate beading to create light-as-air day dresses, pajama shorts with jackets, and mini-meets-maxi panniers that are liberating rather than constrictive. Artist Eva Jospin recreated Baroque caves for the show right in the heart of the garden, bridging the gap of past and present and providing an earthly palace.
