Sinbad Makes First Public Appearance Since Suffering Stroke

Sinbad made his first public appearance since suffering a major stroke in October 2020 at a charity event for Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia.

The 67-year-old comedian joined his former co-stars from A Different World for a virtual event on February 29th that sought to raise money for HBCU scholarships and encourage enrollment.

On Monday, Sinbad posted a video to his Instagram account in which he thanked Morehouse for the enthusiastic reception. “Man, that was so cool. A Different World going to Atlanta, going to Morehouse College and on campuses and getting a chance to be on Zoom and say something to the kids. It’s wild that the kids even know who I am. That’s beautiful.”

“Thank you to everybody who’s been praying for me and saying good things and supporting me during this time in my life. It means a lot to me,” Sinbad added. Expect to see more of me soon. You better believe it. Miracles happen.”

Sinbad suffered an ischemic stroke on October 25th, 2020 due to a blood clot that had traveled from his heart to his brain. After undergoing an initial surgery, another blood clot formed and he underwent a second surgery, and later suffered from brain swelling and bleeding. He was then placed on a ventilator and spent nearly nine months in hospitals and acute care facilities before returning home in July 2021. He was given only a 30% chance of surviving and lost the ability to speak and walk.

In November 2022, Sinbad’s family shared an update revealing that the comedian was amidst an “intense” regimen of physical, occupational, and speech therapy and continues “fighting for every inch.” They added, “Limbs that were said to be ‘dead’ are coming alive and he’s taking the steps necessary to learn to walk again.”
